Proposed Final Budget Notice

The proposed final general fund budget of the Smethport Area School District for the 2020–2021 fiscal year in its most recent form is available for public inspection on the district website. The district will present the final budget for adoption at the Smethport Area School District board meeting on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at 7:30 p.m. in the Smethport Area elementary school. If an individual is unable to access the proposed final budget on the district website, a printed copy is available by contacting Susan Jordan, business manager, via email or by calling the district office at (814) 887-5543 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

Meal Pick Up Changes at the High School Site

Attention, parents and students picking up meals at the high school cafeteria pick-up site! Please note that the pick-up location has been changed. Meal pick up at the high school site will take place in the front circle main entrance area of the high school starting on Wednesday, May 27 and will continue for the final three dates of the meal distribution on Monday June 1, Wednesday, June 3, and Friday, June 5. All other locations and the pick-up times remain the same. The change at the high school is due to the roof project that will start on Tuesday, May 26. Please remember that the final date for meal delivery is on Friday, June 5, the last day of school. There will not be meal delivery during the summer vacation months.

National School Lunch Program Benefit

Families in the Smethport School District may be able to receive free and reduced school lunch and breakfast benefits even though school is not in session. Please note that if your family economic situation has changed, you may apply for the free and reduced lunch and breakfast benefits at any time. Please review our national school lunch program benefit document for further information regarding the program and how to apply.

Improved Access to Elementary Distance Learning Resources

We are very excited to announce an improved way to access your student's at-home learning resources. The teachers have been working extra hard to create grade appropriate at-home resources to encourage review and enrichment for your child. We are now locating the information in a Google folder, which you can view using the directions below. We will be dating these folders on a bi-weekly basis. As new information is available, we will update the folders for your access. Feel free to save the link as a bookmark or favorite, depending on your device, for future use.

To access your student's resources, follow these easy steps:

Every two weeks, we will create a new folder with updated information. We will send bi-weekly alerts to remind everyone to look at the newly dated folders. As always, contact the elementary office and/or your child's teacher with any questions.

School Closure

On April 9, 2020, Governor Wolf announced that all Pennsylvania Schools will remain physically closed for the remainder of the 2019–2020 school year. Education for students will continue via the Smethport Schools Continuing Education Plan for review, enrichment, and planned instruction. Please remember to visit this website frequently for details.

SASD Announces Phase III of Continuing Education Plan

On April 1, 2020, the SASD launched phase III of our continuing education plan. Teachers, educational professionals, and education support professionals returned to active work status today to begin this process. Please take a moment to review the Smethport Area School District continuity of education plan.

Please take the time to read each of the following documents provided by SASD educational leaders. Each letter contains information pertaining to the SASD, Elementary School, Jr./Sr. High School and Special Education Department. From now until June 5, 2020, we will be providing educational activities for our students. Challenging times call for an extraordinary effort and extraordinary response, and we hope that all of our educators, students and families participate in an extraordinary way!

Additional Resources from McKean County Department of Human Services

On April 2, 2020, the McKean County Department of Human Services announced that the state Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services launched a warmline available 24/7 to support individuals who may be experiencing anxiety or other difficult emotions. The toll-free number is (1-855) 284-2494. There is also a county crisis hotline, which you can call at either (1-800) 459-6568 or (814) 362-4623.

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization Helping Children Cope with Emergencies have excellent tips/advice for families to follow. The advice outlined therein reflects good practices which should be done before, during, and after crises: consistent schedules/routines for bedtime and meals and for activities like school and exercise/reading/playing a game and for social contact through phone, tablets, and computers. Xfinity WiFi Hotspot Access Opens Nationwide in Response to Coronavirus

Xfinity WiFi hotspots in out-of-home locations will be available for free to anyone who needs them, including non-Xfinity internet customers, to keep our communities connected with their friends and family.

What hotspots are included?

Xfinity WiFi hotspots located both indoors and outdoors in places like shopping districts, parks, businesses, and train stations will be open. Hotspots located in customers’ homes are not opened to the public.

Customers and non-customers can find the exact hotspot locations on the Xfinity Find a Hotspot page. Xfinity internet customers can also locate them through the Xfinity WiFi Hotspots app. Please read the full Xfinity article for more information.

Safe2Say Program Still Operating

Even though schools are closed for the remainder of the 2019–2020 school year, we want to remind everyone that the Safe2Say Crisis Center is still operating under normal protocols until June 1, 2020. During these unprecedented times, we want students to know that the program is still available. Students may be experiencing concerns and have some uncertainty about where to share safety concerns and information. The Safe2Say system can lead students to the help that they may need.

SASD Communications

In general, all “official” communication for families and the community will be released from the Superintendent’s Office and posted on our websites. Please check the websites frequently and read down through the lists of topics. On some days, there will be multiple posts regarding different topics. Please read carefully and check frequently. Information changes rapidly. Thank you for your understanding.

For residents in need of meals, food, and child-care services. School districts, food pantries, volunteer organizations, and services for seniors are identified in this map web application released by McKean County Services. Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program

The opportunity scholarship tax credit program is available to Smethport students for the 2020–2021 school year. Based on achievement results from the state testing programs, Smethport Jr./Sr. High School students qualify for a program to assist them in attending another participating public or non-public school in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
