What is PowerSchool and how do I get a username and password to use it?

PowerSchool is just another way we keep communication between home and school strong. It provides you with almost real-time access to your child’s grades, attendance history, and other important information. Parents should receive log-in information during the registration process; however, if you have missed or misplaced that information, please call your child’s school office.

Do you enforce a dress code at Smethport?

We expect our students to dress in an appropriate manner at all times. Student dress may not present a health or safety hazard, violate municipal, county, or state law, or present a potential disruption of the educational process. Generally, we do not allow:

  • Head coverings such as: hats, hoods, bandannas, non-prescription sunglasses, headscarves, or handkerchiefs
  • Exposed skin from the waist to the neckline (i.e., mesh shirts, bare midriffs, etc.)
  • Clothing (including buttons or patches) that depict drugs, alcohol, sexually explicit or suggestive material
  • Clothing that depicts profanity
  • Bare feet
  • Backpacks, book bags, sports bags, or large tote bags in the classroom (These items may be brought to school but must be stored in the student’s locker or designated area until dismissal. The only exception to this rule is the use of gym bags to and from physical education class.)
  • Personal items and jewelry that may damage school property or be used as a weapon, including chains over eight inches, jewelry with sharp protrusions, etc.
  • Clothing that reveals undergarments
  • Shorts and skirts shorter than mid-thigh (All pants must reach the end of the wearer’s fingertip when standing.)
  • Outerwear to be worn during the school day

For safety, we require students enrolled in special classes like physical education and/or vocational training to wear clothing as detailed by the instructor’s syllabus.

How can I get more involved?

We strongly encourage your involvement. Please take the time to introduce yourself to your child’s teacher and let him or her know that you’re interested in getting involved. There is some paperwork involved in becoming a volunteer, which you can access on our About Our District page. Parents can also support their child’s education in some basic ways, including:

  • Encouraging your child to get plenty of sleep
  • Offering a healthy diet, including a good breakfast (or getting your child to school early enough to eat breakfast in our cafeteria)
  • Helping your child get up in plenty of time for school
  • Providing neat, clean, comfortable clothes
