We expect you’ll have questions about our policies and procedures. We’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions to help you find the answers you need in a jiffy. Of course, if you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, please contact us.
How do I enroll my child at Smethport?
We are thrilled to welcome new members to our community! Please visit our Registration page for information about enrolling your child at one of our schools.
Does your school offer breakfast and lunch?
We participate in the National School Lunch Program and operate an excellent nutrition program at each campus. Our cafeterias serve free student breakfasts and lunches every school day. For more information, please see our Food Services page.
What if my child requires medication during the school day?
We will administer medication in accordance with state regulations and with physician and parental approval. Please complete our medication authorization form, and bring medications in the original, labeled packaging to the front office. See our Nurse’s Corner on the Student Services page for more information.
Do you provide transportation services?
We are pleased to provide our students with safe, reliable transportation to and from school each day. We consider bus riding a privilege and expect all students to adhere to the rules for their own safety as well as for the safety of others. For information, visit our Transportation page.
What is PowerSchool and how do I get a username and password to use it?
PowerSchool is just another way we keep communication between home and school strong. It provides you with almost real-time access to your child’s grades, attendance history, and other important information. Parents should receive log-in information during the registration process; however, if you have missed or misplaced that information, please call your child’s school office.
Do you enforce a dress code at Smethport?
We expect our students to dress in an appropriate manner at all times. Student dress may not present a health or safety hazard, violate municipal, county, or state law, or present a potential disruption of the educational process. For safety, we require students enrolled in special classes like physical education and/or vocational training to wear clothing as detailed by the instructor’s syllabus. Generally, we do not allow:
- Head coverings such as: hats, hoods, bandannas, non-prescription sunglasses, headscarves, or handkerchiefs
- Exposed skin from the waist to the neckline (i.e., mesh shirts, bare midriffs, etc.)
- Clothing (including buttons or patches) that depict drugs, alcohol, sexually explicit or suggestive material
- Clothing that depicts profanity
- Bare feet
- Backpacks, book bags, sports bags, or large tote bags in the classroom (These items may be brought to school but must be stored in the student’s locker or designated area until dismissal. The only exception to this rule is the use of gym bags to and from physical education class.)
- Personal items and jewelry that may damage school property or be used as a weapon, including chains over eight inches, jewelry with sharp protrusions, etc.
- Clothing that reveals undergarments
- Shorts and skirts shorter than mid-thigh (All pants must reach the end of the wearer’s fingertip when standing.)
- Outerwear worn during the school day
Will my child have access to the internet while on campus?
Students can access the internet for homework and school-related research from our computer labs, libraries, and some classrooms under the supervision of qualified school personnel. We require all students to abide by our Acceptable Use Policy and to behave responsibly on school computer networks.
How can I get more involved?
We strongly encourage your involvement. Please take the time to introduce yourself to your child’s teacher and let him or her know that you’re interested in getting involved. There is some paperwork involved in becoming a volunteer, which you can access on our Human Resources page. We also encourage you to join our PTO.
How do I find out about emergencies or school closures due to inclement weather?
For emergencies or school closures, our district uses Power Announcement to send telephone, text, and/or email messages to parents. It is extremely important for parents to opt-in to these announcements via PowerSchool to receive notices from the district.
We’ll also make inclement weather announcements on the following radio stations and TV channels. Please remember, we do not serve breakfast on days beginning with two-hour delays.
