Career Library
Pennsylvania’s College and Career Readiness standards introduce students to the skills they’ll need for life after high school—whether they’re planning to attend college or jump right into the workforce. At Smethport, students begin preparing for that life in seventh grade. Using tools like Pennsylvania’s Occupational Outlook Handbook and Career Cruising, we build students’ career awareness, set career goals, and help them research necessary educational paths to take in reaching those goals. We teach students how to build a resume, help them develop interview skills, and work on interpersonal skills that will help them succeed on the job. We also highlight entrepreneurial skills in our business and tech classes and encourage students to check out our Career Library for additional resources.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate from Smethport Area High School, students must successfully complete a minimum of 24 credit hours (28 beginning with the class of 2022) during their ninth through twelfth-grade years. Besides elective courses, students must earn the following:
- 4 English credits (1 each year)
- 3/4 math credits (4 starting with the class of 2022)
- 3/4 science credits (4 starting with the class of 2022)
- 4 social studies credits (including American government/economics)
- 2 health credits (taken during ninth and eleventh-grade years)
- 4 physical education credits (1 each year)
- Driver’s ed (taken 10th-grade year)
Class Rankings
We determine class rankings by calculating each student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a scale of 0 to 100. This represents an average of all final grades earned in credited classes from ninth grade onward. The student with the highest cumulative GPA of their class is ranked number one. If two or more students complete Smethport with the same average, they are assigned the same rank but all subsequent numbers are left unassigned. For example, if two students tie for highest GPA, they will each receive a rank of one. The next available rank will be three; there will be no rank of two. We name the top two ranking seniors the valedictorian and salutatorian of their class.
